Realtors Holiday Breakfast and Auction Raises Over $6,800 for Homeless and Low Income Families

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

The San Mateo County Association of Realtors® (SAMCAR) Coastside Realtors and affiliates have raised a total of $6,845 which will go to homeless, low income and working poor individuals and families this holiday season. The funds came from the annual Realtors Breakfast and Fundraiser held on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at the Community Center in Half Moon Bay.

The event was attended by approximately 50 people, and the mood was jovial, with Santa Claus as the special guest. Realtors and affiliates from the Half Moon Bay area donated numerous items for the holiday auction, which took place after breakfast. Auction items included beautiful holiday floral arrangements, wine, gift certificates for dinner and weekend getaways. Michael Rain, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker, served as the event’s auctioneer.

Proceeds from the event will go to Coastside Hope, formerly the Coastside Opportunity Center, a nonprofit multi-service center which assists disadvantaged Coastside residents in San Mateo County. Many of the agency’s clients are immigrant and Hispanic families who work in the fields and in the service sector, lack transportation and health care.

Alain Pinel Realtor Rose Serdy, who serves as chairperson of the event, said SAMCAR’s Realtors Breakfast and Fundraiser started three years ago in Half Moon Bay and was the brainchild of Nancy Kinghorn of Harrell Remodeling, Inc., a former SAMCAR member, who is now an affiliate with the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors® (SILVAR). Serdy also serves on the board of Coastside Hope. She said supporting Coastside Hope is a way SAMCAR’s Half Moon Bay Realtors and affiliates are able to give back to the community.

In addition to donating proceeds from the holiday breakfast and auction to the agency, the Realtors participate in the agency’s Adopt-a-Family program, providing clothes and toys for Christmas to nearly 400 local families and seniors. Coastside Hope, in association with Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo County, also gives away hundreds of bags of food each month and the Realtors help distribute these food items to about 90 local families during the third Thursday of each month.

Serdy said Coastside Hope, which is based in El Granada, “is near and dear to my heart and that of other Realtors because as Realtors, we put people in homes and Coastside Hope assists those who have become homeless and prevents others from becoming homeless.”
