Event CoverageSAMCAR’s Cultural Diversity Committee meets, sets goals for 2007Saturday, January 13, 2007
A Wine and Cheese Party at SAMCAR on Friday, January 12, set the mood for 2007 for SAMCAR’s Cultural Diversity Committee. SAMCAR’s 2007 President Geoffrey Craighead and Cultural Diversity Committee Chair Patricia Lindo welcomed about 35 Realtors and affiliates to the event and encouraged them to actively be involved in enhancing understanding and awareness of other cultures within SAMCAR’s membership. In doing so, SAMCAR members would be able to expand the quality of service to customers of diverse backgrounds and ultimately increase the rate of homeownership to individuals and families of culturally diverse populations. These are just some of the goals of the Cultural Diversity Committee, said Lindo, a Realtor with Cashin Company in Burlingame. Lindo is also president of NAHREP (National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals), Silicon Valley chapter. Together with Cultural Diversity Co-chair Robert Huiber of American Mortgage, Lindo hopes to provide a forum where SAMCAR’s cultural diverse members can communicate and collectively express their respective agendas and advance housing through education, business development, and outreach programs. She also hopes to involve key leaders of other real estate associations that represent populations of other cultures in these activities. The committee met again early this week to schedule a number of events for the year. The first event will be a brown bag luncheon meeting at SAMCAR, 12-1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 15, entitled, “Celebrate the Chinese New Year, Understanding the Asian Market.” The meeting will feature a panel presentation on the culture and demographics of the Asian market. Other events include presentations on RESPA guidelines, risk management and current tax laws, a Veinte Cinco de Mayo celebration in May, a homebuyer seminar, community outreach and a multicultural event. Lindo is excited about the upcoming events. She said, “We can give better service to our clients if we understand the cultural nuances, changes and accomplishments of the melting pot that is San Mateo County.” In a recent presentation to SAMCAR members, San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill noted that the county’s demographic landscape is changing. Hill said in 1980, 70 percent of San Mateo County’s population was Caucasion. Now, Caucasians comprise just 49.8 percent of the county, while Hispanics and Asians comprise 40 percent of the population, and that number is expected to grow. The Cultural Diversity Committee meets at SAMCAR, 2 p.m. on every third Tuesday of the month. SAMCAR Realtors and affiliates are invited to attend and learn more about other cultures.
