Event Coverage$7,450 to Coastside Hope![]() Tuesday, February 20, 2007
A check for $7,450, proceeds from last December’s Holiday Breakfast Auction, was presented to Coastside Hope Executive Director Cheri Parr and Dell Williams, president of the board, at SAMCAR’s February 20 Coastside Tour Meeting. San Mateo County REALTORS® Foundation Chair Denise Aquila said, “On behalf of the San Mateo County REALTORS® Foundation, it’s very exciting to give this money away to such a deserving cause.” Aquila said money raised by SAMCAR Realtors and affiliates through various events throughout the year is given away to San Mateo County charities with housing needs attached to them. She said SAMCAR members who have other charities unrelated to housing can still donate to their causes through the Foundation, and invited members to let the Foundation know about their charities. “Let us know your involvement level in various charities,” said Aquila. “We’re always trying to raise the level of the community’s thoughts about what Realtors do. Those hours you donate are priceless. We need to let our communities know that we’re more than just Realtors who sell houses; that we also give back to our communities.” Coastside Hope (formerly the Coastside Opportunity Center) is a nonprofit multi-service center which assists disadvantaged Coastside residents in San Mateo County. Many of the agency’s clients are immigrant and Hispanic families who work in the fields and in the service sector, lack transportation and health care. ”Thank you for being so generous to donate your money to this particular charity,” said Rose Serdy, who serves as chairperson of the annual Coastside holiday fundraiser. Serdy also serves on the board of Coastside Hope. Serdy said the annual SAMCAR Realtors breakfast and fundraiser started three years ago in Half Moon Bay and was the brainchild of Nancy Kinghorn of Harrell Remodeling, Inc., a former SAMCAR member, who put her energies into the cause but had to step back due to health issues. “You all know I have a passion for Coastside Hope,” said Serdy. “You’ve seen me grovel and beg. All of you have stepped up and supported me through the years and have made it so successful. I acknowledge it would not be successful if not for all of you being successful.” Parr and Williams thanked SAMCAR members and noted Coastside Hope has increased in distribution of services by 400 percent in the last few years. “Your support is incredibly important. There is no other group on the Coast that does more to give back than the local Realtor community,” said Parr. Parr also recognized Serdy and said, “She is a great example of a person putting her heart into the organization and giving back.”
