Michelle Velez, DEI / Fair Housing Committee Chair |
I was honored to be tapped to serve as chair of SAMCAR's DEI / Fair Housing Committee in 2025. For me, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are not just buzzwords; they are foundational principles for creating a more equitable and prosperous real estate industry. Real estate professionals play a pivotal role in shaping the communities we live in, making DEI not only a moral imperative but also a business necessity.
Addressing Historical Inequities: Real estate has a history of exclusion, from redlining to discriminatory lending practices.(1) Prioritizing DEI helps rectify these injustices and ensure fair housing opportunities for all.
Fostering Stronger Communities: Diverse and inclusive neighborhoods lead to greater cultural exchange, innovation, and economic growth. Real estate professionals have the power to create spaces that celebrate differences and encourage unity.
Reflecting Client Needs: Today's homebuyers and renters are more diverse than ever. Embracing DEI ensures that the industry evolves to meet the needs of all clients, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or background.
DEI isn't just about doing the right thing—it's also smart business. Recent studies indicate that inclusive practices attract top talent, enhance employee satisfaction, and build trust with clients.(2),(3) In real estate, these factors can translate to stronger relationships, better service, and long-term success.
To truly integrate DEI into real estate, the industry must take actionable steps:
Education: Offer training to address unconscious bias and increase awareness of historical inequities, including the National Association of Realtors Fairhaven online fair housing simulation.
Representation: Diversify leadership, hiring, and mentorship programs to create pathways for underrepresented groups.
Advocacy: Support policies that promote equitable housing, from fair lending to anti-discrimination legislation.
Community Engagement: Partner with organizations that champion DEI and actively invest in underserved communities.
A way to do this is to become a member of SAMCAR's DEI / Fair Housing Committee. This committee can encompass each of the above steps. Having a strong committee can also help mentor new agents.

DEI is about more than compliance; it's about creating an industry that values and uplifts everyone. By embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into our daily practices, we can unlock the true potential of real estate to drive positive change.
Now is the time for real estate professionals to take the lead in fostering a more inclusive and equitable future—because when everyone has a seat at the table, we all thrive.
