The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) is seeking input on the draft Private Mortgage Insurer Eligibility Requirements (PMIERs) for companies that insure mortgage loans owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac (the Government Sponsored Enterprises, or GSEs). Private mortgage insurance is often required for borrowers with down payments less than 20 percent, which makes the proposed requirements (and how they are crafted) vital to ensuring the uninterrupted flow of mortgage capital.
